Salt water pool systems are HOT ! Yes it's true, salt pools are all the rage. Swimming in a pool with a salt water pool system has gained massive traction in the United States.
2011 distributation reports from the sunbelt states have shown a dramatic increase in salt water pool system sales. The numbers dont' just stop in the southern states. The northern states have seen steady growth as well. They are also enjoying the many benefits of healthier pool water and also reaping the cost saving in producing their own chlorine to sanitize their pool water.
With the 2012 swimming season merely weeks away , Now is the best time to install a salt water pool system for your family to enjoy. The kids will love opening their eyes underwater and you will love just how luxurious the water feels on your skin. My clients say they actually use the pool more with a salt system. They also are pleased with the fact that they don't have to drive all over town to pick up toxic pool chemicals. Leaving them more time to do what they love best, sped time with their families. I encourage you read some of my previous post and educate yourself on the power of the salt pool. In the end my belief is that it just make sense to install a salt water pool system.
Salt water pool systems are a greener solution to using liquid chlorine in your pool weekly. The cost to manufacture liquid chlorine is tremoundous. Mega electricity to produce, Mega fuel to transport it and huge enviromental and health impacts can accure if spilled.
Recently we installed two salt water pool systems on a commercial pool here in Orange County CA. The homeowner association board of directors had two goals in mind. 1- Make the pool area a healthier place to swim and enjoy with family and friends. 2- Reduce the monthly cost of chlorine by producing their own with saltwater chlorine generators.
This is a very proactive approach due to the fact that the cost of chlorine is rising and restrictions on transporting it are increasing. These system have been so effective that the California Environmental Health Association is now approving these systems. Their requirement is that they must have an output of 3 lbs of chlorine per day minimum. Here's a link for their approved equipment list. Look under "chlorinators" Note that some parts of Los Angeles will not allow these systems.
Many of the systems we favor for easy of use and longevity will only produce 1.5 lbs. per day. So we must install a minimum of two units. An additional requirement states they must be installed in a side stream configuration. Here's a diagram of what a side stream installation should look like.
I commented in a previous post on my trip to an Arizona resort where the swimmer demand was very high. I was surprised to hear they were running more than a few salt water pool systems to keep the water fresh and healthy. What I forgot to mention was the "Snow bird" population at that resort. "Snow Birds" are usually older men and women who escape the cold weather and search for warm destinations from October through April. Many come from as far away as Alaska just to say warm and out of the snow. I spoke to many of them regarding the pool and most mentioned the saline pool water as a huge plus. Many felt it was very healing and it was a big reason for them to came back again.
You have heard me preach about a salt water pool system being the best thing since sliced bread right? Good because it is just that good. The health benefits of a saline pool are tremendous check out this older post here or as a reminder. But like anything , you can run into problems with just about anything.
Fact is like all salt, pool salt is very corrosive. Many of the modern swimming pools we are building these days have a tremendous amount of stone veneer, rock deck work and Travertine and limestone coping edges. These softer materials have a very low scratch test rating, Otherwise known as a Mohs hardness test. Simply put these stone materials I have described are very soft and need to be protected from the harsh negative affects of pool salt.
Four ways to protect stone materials in a swimming pool environment are:
- Protect all surfaces in contact with the pool water by sealing them with a non-gloss penetrating sealer designed to work with a salt water pools
- Do not allow salt water to run over stone materials
- Don't allow standing water on decking or coping for long periods of time. If you have to, wash down the swim area when your done for the day
- Check pool salinity for the correct levels. Anything over 4000 PPM will need to be addressed by diluting the body of water with fresh water.
The pictures in this post are of a coping edged in Travertine stone. The disintegration of the stone is due to high levels of salt water being splashed on the non-sealed stone surface.
When I checked the salt level with my electronic tester is was shocked to find the level at 5210 PPM ! All of this could have been resolved by sealing the stone surfaces with Stone Tech bullet proof stone sealer This would have allowed the salt water from the pool to sit on the stone and not be absorbed thus not eating away the softer material. Note to te wise. Chose your sealer carefully and go with atrusted product. Some sealers will last up to 5 years or more before they need to be re-sealed.
In the end, Yes there are some pitfalls to a salt water pool system. but with the proper knowledge and stone protection you can enjoy them for years of trouble free healthy swimming in your pool. Cheers!
